About WalkOurWorld

walkourworld is the firstborn of a series of multi-lingual websites from OurWorld Internet Services Ltd (incorporating beaconsway.net) providing free information to local people, visitors and special interest groups.

Sibling sites in various stages of development, using the same database and server architecture, include:

  • www.bit.web.com - A computerised resurrection of the "Bit Information Service" concept which was conceived by John 'Hoppy' Hopkins and implemented for some years in London in the late 1960s and 1970s.
  • www.climbourworld.com - A database of the world's peaks and rockfaces.
  • www.caveourworld.com - Exploring the world's caves and potholes.
  • www.boatourworld.com - Boating, sailing, rafting and canoeing opportunities and facilities along the world's rivers and on lakes, seas and oceans
  • www.diveourworld.com - Exploring the world underwater.
  • www.skiourworld.com - The world's ski and snowboard runs, touring routes, resorts and training facilities
  • www.sledourworld.com - Mushing and polar trekking, as well as all flavours of tobogganing.
  • www.surfourworld.com - Beaches and surfing opportunites across the world.
  • www.overlandourworld.com - Promoting sustainable travel and tourism by providing information on alternatives to going by air.
We grant credits towards web advertising on any of our sites to contributors. These credits are transferrable. Anyone gaining credits by contributing text material, images, media files, or accurate translations, is welcome to transfer or sell them. That way a friend or partner, or an employer or third party, can take advantage of context-sensitive web advertising within the broad criteria set out in our Terms and Conditions.

Server Resources (for techies)

Our sites are hosted on purpose built computer hardware:
  • Matched Dual-Core AMD Opteron 265 64-bit Processors
  • Tyan Thunder motherboard with 4GBytes ECC Buffered RAM
  • 4 x 500 Gbyte SATA drives configured as a RAID array, giving just under a TeraByte for the MySQL database
  • 300 GByte EIDE drive for the Apache2 webserver
  • 2 x SCSI Drives for the UNIX (FreeBSD 6.2) operating system
  • PHP, MySQL and Apache configured for Unicode (UTF-8) support
The reference language for the initial server/database development has been English. We are happy to explore co-hosting possibilities with individuals and/or organisations in other regions using different reference languages.

Server, database and operating system software is all free and open source. The configuration appears stable, and direct technical support in commissioning could be available as part of any co-hosting arrangement.

Please feel free to contact if you would like to be part of building the sites or growing the business. Here be Programmers, not Linguists - communications in English are likely to be best understood!
