The walkourworld site aims
to provide a database of the world's walks:
- Mountain Climbs and Hikes
- Coastal Paths
- Long-Distance Footpaths
- Scenic Rambles Long and Short
- Geological Field Excursions
- Nature Study and Ecology Walks
To find out how you can help to build the site,
please have a look at the Contribute page.
The walkourworld server should recognise
which country you are in,
and as development progresses,
it should return pages in your country's most
widely used language.
If you prefer to use a different language,
or if the country detection is not correct,
please select from the drop-down lists.
Check the List All box for inclusion
of all supported countries and languages.
You have the option of allowing the site
to set a "cookie" in your computer
by checking the Save box,
so that your preferred country and language
will display when you visit the site again.
walkourworld uses 'Project Lingo' database tables
and dictionaries,
which are being developed with input
from language teachers and students
throughout the world.
At the time of writing (6th August 2007),
Project Lingo supports more than 300 languages,
although only a few are partially implemented
on walkourworld thus far.
The business model for walkourworld
is that the site should be self-supporting
through context-sensitive advertising.
The site is hosted by Our World Internet Services
and is being developed
as an in-house public service project.
The website servers are located in Wales (UK),
within the Fforest Fawr GeoPark,
and on the boundary
of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Coverage of these popular hiking areas
is likely to be included
in the earliest phase of the site's development.
Please bear with us as the site develops;
contribute photographs and text
describing your favourite walk;
help us to build language support;
and above all enjoy!
Charles Brewster
